Transitioning into 2025

January is all about transitions. The weather is going to get worse before it starts getting better again. One calendar year yields to the next along with yet another opportunity to make resolutions. Government administrations end and new administrations take up their work.

This January, it is my new year’s resolution to try my best to get more of our congregation engaged in the study of the new book.

In recent years, we at Grace have been giving increasing attention to our common responsibility to do what we can to mitigate human caused global warming and severe climate change. We have learned that “care of creation” is a profound stewardship issue. What are we doing today to care for the world of tomorrow when we will be gone?

What If We Get It Right?: Visions of Climate Futures by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is an enlightening and often surprising set of reflections imagining the future if we get it right, that is, if we adopt new ways of thinking about the use of the earth’s many resources. The book is in fact a very hope reflection on the power of individuals and local communities to adapt and adopt new patterns of living.

Grace’s book study group completed the first two sections of the book during the fall. Beginning January 8 and running through February 26, the Book Study Group and the Midweek Bible Study Group will be merged and will meet by Zoom on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm The group will pick up on January 8 with a brief recap of the first two sessions before we move into section three. For the benefit of those who participated in the fall sessions and want a refresher and for those who are considering joining us in January, Kathie Bender Schwich graciously prepared a recap of the first two sections. Thank you, Kathie!

I hope it will be one of your new year’s resolutions to join our Book Discussion Group this January and February. Perhaps it will help you transition into new ways of thinking about age-old issues and challenges.

In the love, joy, peace and hope of Jesus,

 Pastor Daniel Schwick
